This week, Pressalit marked the UN’s international World Toilet Day to raise awareness of the global sanitary crisis.
Global sanitary crisis
World Toilet Day is about inspiring action to tackle the global sanitation crisis. Today, 4.5 billion people live without a safe toilet and 892 million people still practice open defecation. The impact of exposure to human faeces on this scale has a devastating impact on public health, living and working conditions, nutrition, education and economic productivity across the world.
Partnership with UNICEF WASH
Every year on November 19th, Pressalit marks World Toilet Day. At Pressalit, sanitation is a natural part of our daily work, as a large part of our core business is to design and produce toilet seats. Therefore, Pressalit has a responsibility to help raising awareness of the importance of toilets and decent sanitary conditions. This is why Pressalit supports the UNICEF WASH project, as part of our work with SDG #6: clean water and sanitation. The WASH initiative works to ensure clean water and sanitation across the world.
World Toilet Day 2018
The theme of this year’s World Toilet Day campaign is “When Nature Calls”. The campaign focuses on the importance of toilet and sanitation systems, which works in harmony with the ecosystems of nature, for instance:
- Composting latrines, which collect and treat human waste on site, producing a free supply of fertiliser to help grow crops.
- Human-made wetlands and reed-beds, which filter wastewater before it is released back into watercourses.
To help raise awareness of the issue and the progress within the field, Pressalit marked this year’s World Toilet Day with an exhibition of images from UNICEF’s WASH initiatives from all over the world, and a small Pressalit and UNICEF related quiz with prizes from the local stores. Lastly, we had a food truck with pancakes visiting us and serving pancakes for all employees.
